WASHINGTON DC – It was announced earlier this morning that U.S. Representative Jason Smith (R-Missouri) has been appointed to the Committee on Ways and Means. The Committee on Ways and Means is the oldest committee of the United States Congress, and is the chief tax-writing committee in the House of Representatives.
At age 33, Smith represents Missouri’s 8th Congressional District in the southeast corner of the state and is the 6th youngest member serving in the United States Congress. Smith served as the Speaker Pro-Tem of the Missouri House of Representatives prior to beating over a dozen candidates in a special election to replace former Congresswoman Joann Emerson after her 2012 retirement.
As a member of this influential committee, Smith will have a big voice on legislation impacting tax policy, international trade, and social security measures specific to Medicare and Medicaid.
